600,000 people, the counted number of Jews in the wilderness.

600,000 is the approximate total of the men of the military tribes (Exod 12.37), with the Exodus generation's fighting men being counted more precisely as 603,550 (Num 1.46) but the Levites were also counted - albeit in a separate count - and the counted Levite males were 22,000. The total counted number of Jews in the wilderness is therefore 625,550.

The indicated note says nothing at all about today's cities. The intention is likely Siman 94, note 101.
