This was an act of humility on Shmuel's part, but it was humility not for its own sake, as evidenced by the fact that when Chiya left, Shmuel did defend his actions...
The authors obviously confused Shmuel with Rav Huna here. Shmuel's should be Rav Huna's and Shmuel should be Rav Huna
