For example, King David avenged the death of Saul's sole remaining son Ish-Bosheth after his father and brothers had died, and because Jonathan's only remaining son Mephibosheth was crippled (2 Sam 4:4-12).
In fact, Saul had at least two other sons still alive at that time - Armoni and Mephibosheth, sons of Saul who David later on extradited to the Gibeonites (2 Sam 21)

A common way to express guilt is to say of the murderer that 'he has blood' (ישׁ לו דמים). By contrast, an innocent person 'has no blood' (e.g. 35:27).
The biblical expression אין לו דם actually refers to a man who has forfeited his right to live, not to an innocent person who retains the protection of the law. Similarly, the rabbinic expression יש לו דמים refers to a person who cannot be killed (i.e., an innocent person). Thus, the author has gotten this completely backwards.
